ASTM C39 Compression Testing Equipment Checklist

Specify the equipment and documents for concrete cylinder compression testing. Start with the specimen schedule and review the complete testing arrangement before ordering a machine.

Set the scope of the laboratory workflow

ASTM C39/C39M addresses compressive strength testing of cylindrical concrete specimens, including molded cylinders and drilled cores within its scope. It is a test method, so putting its number on a machine quotation does not establish that the complete laboratory procedure is ready.

Define the cylinder diameters and heights, expected strength range, daily volume and the edition required by the project. Specimen making, curing, core preparation and end preparation may reference other documents. Obtain the governing methods and identify which activities the laboratory performs in-house.

Check equipment, configuration and evidence together

Review each item against the proposed specimen schedule. This is an equipment-planning checklist; numerical tolerances and procedural requirements must come from the applicable standard.

Select the force capacity using the cylinder schedule

For a 150 mm diameter cylinder at an expected 80 MPa, the calculated failure load is approximately 1414 kN. A 2000 kN frame may therefore be a candidate, subject to the verified working range, operating headroom and specimen fit. Higher expected loads may require a 3000 kN or larger configuration.

Compare LS-CM2000A, LS-CM3000A and LS-CM3000P using the complete arrangement rather than capacity alone. Identify the controller, fixtures, preparation accessories, verification documents and report requirements in the final equipment schedule.

Define the acceptance review before delivery

Agree which documents and demonstrations will be reviewed at acceptance. Check that records identify the supplied machine and measurement system, and that the specimen arrangement matches the ordered fixtures. Run the laboratory's approved procedure with trained personnel before adopting the equipment for routine reporting.

Keep the official method, equipment instructions, verification records and laboratory SOP connected. A general equipment checklist cannot replace the current standard or the laboratory's procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 2000 kN a universal ASTM C39 requirement?

No. Capacity must suit the expected specimen failure loads and the machine's verified operating range. The appropriate configuration depends on cylinder dimensions, expected strengths and the required test procedure.

Does buying a machine listed for ASTM C39 complete the laboratory setup?

No. The laboratory also needs appropriate specimen preparation, measuring equipment, verification documentation, test records and an approved procedure for the governing method.
