2000 kN vs 3000 kN Concrete Compression Testing Machines

Choose machine capacity from the specimens you actually test. Compare expected failure load, calibrated range and specimen clearance before selecting a 2000 or 3000 kN frame.

Start with the expected failure load

Failure load depends on both compressive strength and loaded area. With strength in MPa and area in mm², estimated load in kN equals strength × area ÷ 1000. Use side² for a cube and π × diameter² ÷ 4 for a cylinder. Cylinder height affects the fixture clearance even though it is not part of this area calculation.

The examples below are calculated loads, not a machine's certified specimen capacity. Allow for the highest expected strength, not just the nominal concrete grade, and confirm the proposed test loads lie within the machine's verified working range.

Calculated failure loads for example specimens

SpecimenStrengthEstimated loadCapacity implication
150 mm cube60 MPa1350 kNBelow 2000 kN; verify the working range and fixtures
150 mm cube80 MPa1800 kN90% of 2000 kN; review strength variability and operating headroom
150 mm cube100 MPa2250 kNExceeds 2000 kN; evaluate 3000 kN or another suitable frame
150 mm diameter cylinder80 MPa1414 kNBelow 2000 kN; also check specimen height and end fixtures
200 mm cube80 MPa3200 kNExceeds both capacities

Compare the calibrated range and available test space

A higher maximum capacity does not by itself establish performance at low test loads. Request the verified force range and accuracy documentation for the quoted measuring system. A laboratory testing both low-strength and high-strength specimens should check the lowest and highest expected failure loads.

Check vertical clearance with the specimen, caps, spacers and bearing blocks installed. Confirm lateral access, platen dimensions and piston travel using a configuration drawing. Two frames with the same kN rating may have different available test spaces.

Compare Lithostek configurations

LS-CM2000A is the 2000 kN automatic configuration for laboratories prioritizing quiet operation and stable loading. LS-CM3000A provides a 3000 kN four-column frame. LS-CM3000P combines 3000 kN capacity with servo-hydraulic loading, programmable load rates and digital reporting. Select the final configuration from the required test procedure and specimen schedule.

  • Prepare a list of specimen dimensions and expected strength ranges.
  • Confirm capacity, verified measuring range, fixture arrangement and clearance.
  • Compare controller workflow, required test records and calibration documents.
  • Request the configuration drawing and installation requirements for the selected model.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 2000 kN enough for a 150 mm concrete cube?

It depends on the expected strength. A 150 mm cube at 80 MPa gives an estimated 1800 kN load, while the same cube at 100 MPa gives 2250 kN and exceeds 2000 kN. Verify operating headroom, the calibrated range and fixture suitability.

Does a 3000 kN machine test every concrete specimen?

No. For example, a 200 mm cube at 80 MPa has a calculated failure load of 3200 kN. Specimen fit and the verified measurement range also limit the usable configuration.
