PLASTIC PIPE TESTING

Oxygen Index Testers

Oxygen index testing finds the minimum oxygen volume fraction in an oxygen–nitrogen mixture that supports combustion under a defined procedure. It complements melt flow and thermal testing when a material specification calls for burning-behaviour data. The result describes the tested specimen and conditions, rather than a complete fire classification of a finished product.

Select an oxygen index test configuration

Define the specimen

State the polymer, thickness, specimen dimensions and whether it is self-supporting, flexible or cellular. Confirm the required holder and preparation procedure.

Match the gas system to the method

Specify the oxygen and nitrogen supplies, regulation, flow range, concentration measurement and calibration requirements.

Confirm the standard edition

Submit the exact method and acceptance criteria so column geometry, gas-control performance, ignition equipment and reporting can be reviewed.

Measuring heat of combustion instead?

Use a bomb calorimeter for gross calorific value. Oxygen index and heat of combustion are different measurements.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Select it only when the compound, conduit, pipe or product specification requires oxygen index data. Pressure, impact, reversion and other finished-pipe tests remain separate requirements.

No. Oxygen index is a laboratory burning-behaviour measurement. A finished-product classification may require additional methods, specimen assemblies and acceptance criteria.
